This makes me laugh! It’s great to see people trying to help themselves by building backlinks to their websites, but when it comes to commenting on blogs, I think a little more effort is required! Now the term ‘content is king’ doesn’t really feature in the comment posts that I get every day and if you want to succeed in getting your blog comment approved, even if the whole purpose of it is to gain a backlink, then for the love of god write something worthwhile, informative or humorous, please!
Here’s some comments submitted to my blog recently, luckily they were caught by Askimet and didn’t slip through the net. I realize some of these are submitted by bots and those ones are particularly obvious but for those ones added by a human – put some effort in!
“I respect your honesty and your opinion. I’m a man. I never read comic books. I don’t know if i could have pointed to Iron Man in a lineup of comic book characters. And i don’t particularly like movies based on comic books. BUT I love Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges, so i decided to give the movie a chance.“
I’m glad this user respects my honesty and opinion. I’m also thankful he made clear his gender too, very useful! But can anyone tell me why he’s telling me about his favourite actors?! Who’s next?
“Promote and submit your site and enjoy many totally free services and items at 12 Tapsearch Com unlimited free sites -see all at http://linkbux.xx/djh1 Main site at http://txxsearch.com“

Askimet I love you!
Oh dear, zero points for effort, hundred points for cheekiness. Was this person dropped on their head at birth? I think so… How about this one:
“Thanks for the informative post.. and thanks for adding our comment to the blog.“
Very generic, very obvious, very unadventurous. Where is the effort? If you are a blog owner then you’ll know just how annoying comments like these are…
“well guess this post is a bit old and things have changed since then.but thanks for informing me.“
They’re just hoping that their generic crap talking will fit into the context of the post that the commenter has not read. I know spam is nothing new but why post comments like this that will never make the grade when a little more effort and thought would get you accepted and a backlink gained? It’s beyond me!
I could go on and on adding examples but it’s boring. I just wanted to highlight the kind of crap people are putting out to try and gain backlinks, in fact I don’t believe it is humans doing this anymore, I think someone has hired a team of Orangutans to do it for them judging by the quality of them. If those comments are a reflection on the people posting them then no wonder so many people complain that IM is too difficult and they don’t get anywhere! If you’re gonna do it, do it properly…

Hi Joe,
You are very right people just think that they can make lot of links by just adding few words on the comment.
And its too boring when people say just thanks for information kind of stuff…

Yes there are lots of spammers out there and I too am receiving massive spam blog comments. What if in my case, I was really amused by your post to the point that you have cited some spammy comment? Would you consider me a spammer too? lol

I agree. I get loads of equally useless comments and spam on my blog. Though askimet is good I prefer to check all comments manually.

Thank you so much for being forward about commenting on the proper way to make a comment. Your 100 % right, all they want is a backlink. Site owners have to understand that the comment box is for commenting on the blog itself, not about the commentors life story.
For example of a quick backlink to their site that i received the other day:
Gjob thanks – John http://www.xxx. com Come on, is that a comment on a blog they had just read ? I really think that 70 % of commentators don’t even read the blog. I really don’t like to reject comments, however, some comments deserve to be in the trash can.
I guess some people just don’t realize the work that goes into writing an article and it’s only for their benefit. To supply them with informative information. I guess my comment is starting to look like an article so i’ll quit while i’m ahead.
Thanks again

Those spammy comments have gotten so bad lately! I’m still smiling over the Google Code blog’s approach to the problem
I clicked to make a comment, late June. First: a notification that the comments are moderated, okay, that’s par for the course. Next line is a request not to leave blatantly self-promoting or site-promoting link-only comments NOR
I couldn’t agree more, as the spam comments of totally generic or irrelevant bot lingo is just as bad or worse than those spam ads for ladies shoes and handbags!

Yes, I agree that we need to look at this issue, however maybe we bloggers can also come up with some creative ideas to fix this. We give something and the commenter gives something back , he at least reads the blog and taught about it for more than 1 second. The spammers are looking for easy backlinks, we are looking for sensible, reasonable comments. I don’t pretend to have the answer but how about demanding the comment to be more than the one liners. and write a script to filter them out,,,my opinion.

without having a moderator this becomes a difficult issue to solve , how do we encourage people to give good thoughtful comments? Ome way is to say it upfront, give a good comment and we will approve it so you can get a backlink, both partners get something. Another way is to state that the comment will be reviewed and it will take a few days before showing up. Aside from the 2 above points I think you are right ,, they are not humans.

Backlinks are the most important external thing you could for your domain. To get a general idea of your web status simply take a look at this info analysis: http://ministatus.com/

Hi,
I am a newbie to all this IM and I was googling to find the best way to make comments and leave a backlink to my site. As I don’t feel comfortable just making a comment for the sake of it. I enjoy reading what people have to say but leaving unjust comments is not me.
But I found your site instead and I am still none the wiser as the most appropriate way to achieve this is their blog etiquette
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

I think Blog commenting is a very nice way to get the traffic instead of backlinks. Instead of blog commenting Forums and Article postings gets you backlinks provided the URL of your website is added to your signature. If your blog is submitted to Social Bookmarking or Networking sites such as a Delicious or Digg which are Cached by the Google spiders on daily basis you might just get a backlinks when Google update PR!!

“I think someone has hired a team of Orangutans to do it for them judging by the quality of them” that was great, made me actually laugh.
Yes people post a lot of crap hoping they will get a free backlink, but it only takes a few minutes to actually read a post and make a real comment on it… Oh yea, hope you post my comment because I not only didn’t read your post, but my comment is extremely short and I am obviously a bot producing spam! LOL

Hi Joe,
A piece of advice to those with blogs is patience. In this world of internet, spammers are always there. Patiently waiting to place trashes. Thus it is vital to activate Akismet since it filters spam’s and comments. Then you can just manually click and approve those that are sensible.
I strongly agree with instinctis. Indeed backlinking is the most powerful option to drive tons of traffic to your website.
Thanks.

Quite informative post, Lee, but let me say link exchange is a must within any serious link building strategy. Blog commenting is a good complement, but just a complement.

Its just like you read my mind! You apparently know a lot related to this, like you wrote the book in it or some thing. It is my opinion that you could do with some pics to drive what it’s all about home a little, but in addition to that, it’s really terrific blog..

Thanks so much for the great advice. I’m relatively new to blogging. You mentioned network, and I’ve definitely tapped into my professional and personal network through sites like Linked In and Facebook. http://www.self-esteem-tips.com That’s definitely helped to grow my readership, along with having good, quality content related to careers and discovering your passion. Thanks again for the practical advice!

There are some of those comments that get through Akismet, and that really makes you want to blow a fuse, or something. If you really want to get those backlinks in those comments, just like you’ve said, one has to give it some effort. Saying “thank you” or some sugarcoated “nice post” wouldn’t cut it at all.
